ETFs are mutual funds which are listed on the stock exchange and can be traded as if it is a common stock listed on the exchange. The benefits of ETFs when compared with normal mutual fund are that there are market makers to provide liquidity for ETFs and they have lower management fee. ETFs can be divided into 4 categories base on their underlying assets:

ETF which underlying assets are Equities (Equity ETF)

ETF which underlying assets are Bonds (Bond ETF)

ETF which underlying assets are other indices (Other index ETF)
-
ETF which underlying assets are asset prices (Asset Price ETF)
ETFs may invest directly in the assets or invest in a basket of assets or mutual funds which in turn invests into that assets to achieve returns that are comparable to investing directly into the assets.
